Dimensional inspection of workpiece cross-sections should start with drawing dimensions and observable surfaces, followed by sensor selection, mounting and fitting rules. This is a proposed engineering design. It reports no completed inspection equipment, customer acceptance or verified accuracy. Laser triangulation can have regions that illumination or observation cannot reach; a single viewpoint must not be assumed to cover every internal and external contour.
Establish whether each dimension is observable
Provide section drawings, material and surface conditions, tolerances, reference features, workpiece pose and motion conditions. Check deep grooves, occlusion and reflective regions. Mark dimensions as directly observable, requiring another viewpoint or currently unobservable. Multiple viewpoints require separate assessment of coordinate relationships, mounting and calibration.
Processing chain and module responsibilities
| Module | Proposed processing | Deliverables and verification |
|---|---|---|
| Contour acquisition | Receive measured contours, times, units and validity | Interface, sample data and loss records |
| Quality checks | Mark missing segments, saturation, outliers and insufficient coverage | Quality rules and invalid samples |
| Reference localization | Establish section position and orientation from the drawing | Reference definitions and localization failures |
| Geometric fitting | Fit lines, arcs or other features in defined regions | Parameters, residuals and participating points |
| Dimension decisions | Calculate defined dimensions and compare tolerances | Results, rule versions and review records |
Keep invalid branches in fitting and decisions
Filtering and fitting can change edges and small geometric features. Retain original measured contours, parameters and fitting points rather than smoothing away actual dimensional changes. Report pending review or invalid status for insufficient points, insufficient coverage or invalid references, with handling agreed for the business process. If data are invalid, do not output a numeric dimension with a pass status.
Verify measurement and equipment operation separately
First compare representative workpieces using the agreed reference method, then test groups by dimension, position, surface and temperature. Moving measurements also require checks of triggers, sampling positions, speed changes and contour completeness. Accept sustained operation, recovery and host interfaces separately; a static dimensional comparison cannot replace them. See the manufacturer's technical explanation for extraction and calibration mechanisms. It does not establish acceptance of a specified sensor or complete machine.
Handover checklist
Agree on image-capture adapters, calibration and recipe files, dimension definitions, algorithm settings, sample data, build instructions and test records in the contract. List unobservable dimensions and unfinished tests individually. Establish target error, cycle time and the final equipment configuration after input review and pilot verification.
