Linux camera adaptation starts by locating the problem in the software stack. A BSP commonly assembles board startup, the kernel and related software. The device tree describes hardware connections and resources. Drivers execute device-control and data-path operations. Applications request images through available interfaces. Changing one layer does not establish readiness in the others.
Identify the actual software combination
Record the board revision, kernel and supplier branch, device tree, drivers and firmware. BSP contents vary by platform and delivery scope; use the actual file list and build results. Upstream documentation explains mechanisms but does not establish that a supplier kernel has the same interfaces or implementation.
Check inputs and outputs by layer
| Layer | Items to check | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit-board support software and BSP | Startup, kernel configuration and dependencies | Versions and startup logs |
| Device tree | Buses, addresses, power, clocks, reset and endpoints | Correspondence between physical interfaces and active configuration |
| Sensor and receiver drivers | Control communication, modes and data links | Probe, configuration and capture-status logs |
| Capture application | Format, dimensions, buffers and frame times | Raw frames, counters and error records |
Hardware descriptions are not executable drivers
Device-tree nodes and properties must match bindings supported by the current drivers. Adding a node cannot replace a missing driver. The kernel's camera-sensor driver documentation explains the relationship between external clocks, link frequencies and hardware conditions. Check actual values against the target hardware and its bindings.
Continue from probing to raw-frame verification
A detected sensor only establishes progress at the corresponding control-path step. Check whether the target mode forms a working data path, then save format, dimensions, frame times and image content. For intermittent failures, record stopping, recovery and error conditions. A successful preview alone does not establish sustained acquisition.
