Wetting physical properties and interface parameter inversion algorithm services

For material surface, probe liquid, powder imbibition and pendant drop profile tests, it provides calculation evaluation and project adaptation of solid surface energy components, critical surface tension, powder imbibition contact angle and pendant drop interface parameters. The scope of capabilities covers 7 physical properties and interface parameter calculation modules. The project first confirms the model, physical properties, units, calibration and reference methods.

Applicable objects and task boundaries

It is suitable for R&D or instrument software projects where the contact angle and liquid physical properties are known, the test conditions can be recorded, and the interface parameters need to be calculated according to the specified model.

  • Calculate the OWRK solid surface energy component based on the contact angles of various probe liquids.
  • Calculate the dispersion and polar components according to the Wu harmonic mean model.
  • Calculate Lifshitz–van der Waals and acid-base components according to the vOCG model.
  • Perform Zisman linear extrapolation of the contact angle and surface tension of a series of liquids.
  • Calculate the Washburn contact angle based on the powder liquid absorption mass-time data and material constants.
  • Generates a dimensionless pendant drop forward profile under specified Bond parameters.
  • Curvature regression tension estimation on calibrated, preprocessed pendant drop half-contours.

A single uncalibrated image is insufficient to calculate verifiable solid surface energy or surface tension. Corresponding test models and verification methods are required for seat drops, hanging drops, powder liquid absorption, and rough, absorbing, reactive, contaminated or non-homogeneous surfaces.

Input, output and unit requirements

Project Main content Must be fixed in the project
contact angle Multi-probe liquid left and right angles, averages, repeated measurements and status Angle definition, droplet method, baseline, temperature, and undecidable rules
Probe liquid physical properties Total surface tension and corresponding components Physical property source, temperature, batch, unit and valid range
Aspiration data Time, liquid absorption mass, liquid density and viscosity, material constants SI units, filling methods, regression intervals and material constant conventions
Hanging drop profile Half-contour radius versus height, scale, density difference, and gravity Metric scale, coordinate orientation, axial symmetry, smoothing and clipping rules
Inversion results Component, total, regression coefficient, residual, condition number or state Model name, equation conventions, units, validity, and sources of uncertainty

The results interface should retain the model, physical property table version, test temperature, sample number, input angle or profile summary, fit residuals and status. When the equation is not identifiable, the input units are inconsistent, the parameters are out of bounds, or the solution does not converge, a single value that can be misinterpreted as a valid physical property is not output.

Models and calculation routes

Calculate route suitable conditions Main limitations
OWRK surface energy Multi-probe liquid dispersion and polar components are known Results depend on liquid combination, contact angle quality, and model assumptions
Wu surface energy Use the harmonic mean model and the input components are consistent Iterative convergence, nonnegativity, and parameter bounds need to be checked
vOCGacid-base content The probe liquid LW, acid and alkali are complete and the combinations can be identified Parameters cannot be separated reliably when the liquid combination is not of sufficient rank
Zisman extrapolation Homologous liquids and nearly linear relationships are applicable The extrapolated critical tension needs to be explained in conjunction with the applicable scope of the model.
WashburnSuction angle Repeatable calibration of powder loading and material constants Changes in packing, voids, and constant conventions will alter the results
Hanging drop forward model Need to calculate the theoretical profile under specified parameters Used for forward integration and does not replace the complete photo inversion process
Hanging drop curvature regression Contours are calibrated, pre-smoothed and oriented Noise, scale errors and contour preprocessing can affect the results

Projects should first select experiments and physical models before determining image or numerical processing. You cannot get a numerical value first and then choose the one closest to the expected result from multiple models.

Test data and preconditions

Surface energy projects need to provide base material, surface treatment, cleaning and storage methods, test temperature, name and batch of probe fluid, source of physical properties, repeated measurements, and original results of contact angle. The definitions of physical property components used by different models must be consistent.

The powder liquid absorption project needs to record the filling quality, compaction and column conditions, liquid physical properties, balance sampling, starting time, evaporation and material constant calibration process. Material constants cannot be used directly after changes in loading conditions.

Hanging drop projects are required to provide raw images or confirmed contours, pixel scale, camera orientation, density difference, temperature, gravity direction and contour pre-processing rules. When axial symmetry, static balance and contour visibility are not satisfied, the method should be changed or returned to the inapplicable state.

Verification methods and applicable conditions

Software verification first uses known parameters, analytical relationships or reference data to check equations, units, convergence and boundary behavior; project acceptance then uses reference materials, independent physical properties or control methods to check physical deviation, repeatability and input sensitivity.

Surface energy error, surface tension error, repeatability and applicable material range are determined respectively according to the test model, material, liquid, temperature and target equipment. When used in quality systems or external reporting, corresponding standards, calibration and qualification requirements must also be met.

Project implementation and delivery

  1. Model and purpose confirmation: Clarify the required physical properties, models, test methods, units, reporting purposes and applicable materials.
  2. Input and traceability check: Check the contact angle, liquid properties, material constants, scale, density difference and their sources and versions.
  3. Calculate baseline and sensitivity: Use analytical data or reference materials to check backcalculations, residuals, legibility, and input error effects.
  4. Software and interface adaptation: Fixed data fields, unit conversions, solution parameters, status codes, results export and version logging.
  5. Independent test verification: Assess bias, repeatability, failure rates, and boundary samples against agreed reference methods.

Delivery may include algorithm programs or call libraries, model and interface descriptions, physical property tables and configurations, unit and status verification, verification reports and version notes. Reagent procurement, sample preparation, dripping and weighing mechanisms, environmental control, laboratory qualifications and third-party testing are performed within the scope of confirmation.

Acceptance method

Acceptance object Optional indicators Conditions that must be recorded
Analysis and Numerical Computation Known parameter backcalculation error, residuals, convergence and boundary behavior Equation versions, units, tolerances, solvers, and input ranges
solid surface energy Deviation from reference method, repeatability, liquid combination sensitivity Material batches, processing, temperature, liquid properties, and angular methods
Zisman extrapolation Regression residuals, extrapolation intervals and outlier effects Liquid series, fitting intervals, linear applicability and elimination rules
Washburn calculation Reference Angle Deviation, Regression Residuals, and Refill Differences Material constants, filling, liquid properties, time period and balance data
Hanging drop calculation Contour residuals, tension bias, scale and noise sensitivity Density difference, temperature, scale, coordinate direction and reference tension
Exception handling Unit error, not identifiable, not converged, and model not applicable Status codes, logs, manual review and result screening rules

Acceptance thresholds need to be determined based on the use and reference method. Backcalculation within the model can be used as a software check, but it cannot be used alone as a physical quantity value acceptance; development and parameter adjustment data cannot replace independent test data.

Authorization, maintenance and changes

Operating licenses can be provided according to agreed equipment, test methods, material scopes and versions. Continuous services can cover original model problem troubleshooting, physical property table updates, parameter review, regression verification and controlled version updates.

Before changing the probe fluid system, material type, temperature range, test device, physical property source, image calibration, filling method or inversion model, a change evaluation should be conducted first. Overall machine control, source code, laboratory testing, cross-platform adaptation and new physical models are separately listed in the contract.

FAQ

Can the surface energy component of a solid be calculated by measuring only one liquid?

Multiple surface energy components generally cannot be separated reliably. The required amount and combination of liquids depends on the selected model and parameter identifiability, and should be determined before testing.

The contact angle software has results. Can the physical properties be directly inferred?

Baseline, angle method, repeatability, probe fluid properties, temperature, surface treatment and model suitability also need to be confirmed. A computable angle value is not equivalent to satisfying the inversion condition.

Is the hanging drop forward profile equal to the complete ADSA?

no. The forward model generates theoretical contours based on known parameters; full photo inversion also requires contour extraction, scaling, parameter optimization, residual evaluation, and independent reference verification.

Can the page be used as a basis for laboratory testing methods?

cannot. The page explains the algorithm service scope and project conditions. When used in quality systems or external testing reports, applicable standards, method documents, personnel, equipment calibration, environmental and qualification requirements also need to be confirmed.
