Measurement Repeatability and Uncertainty Assessment Services
For visual measurement and automatic inspection projects, it provides statistical evaluation and software adaptation such as confidence interval, measurement uncertainty propagation, measuring tool R&R, calibration regression and two-dimensional straightness. Services focus on identifying error sources, experimental design and reviewable reporting.
Applicable objects and assessment tasks
It is suitable for enterprise projects that already have measurement data, reference values or measurement models and want to evaluate equipment repeatability, reproducibility, calibration relationships and result uncertainty.
- Bootstrap percentile confidence interval for the estimated statistic.
- Perform Monte Carlo propagation by measurement model, input mean and covariance.
- Calculate cross-gage R&R on balanced data consisting of part, operator, and repeated measurements.
- Calibration relationships are evaluated using weighted least squares or Deming regression.
- Use the first-order sensitivity method to analyze the impact of input errors on the output.
- Calculate the minimum area straightness result under the agreed method for finite two-dimensional sampling points.
If the report is used for quality systems, customer acceptance, legal metrology or laboratory accreditation, applicable standards, reference instruments, method documents, qualifications and issuance responsibilities should also be confirmed.
Output content
| output | Main content | Applicable conditions |
|---|---|---|
| confidence interval | Statistics, confidence levels, resampling settings, and intervals | Nominal confidence levels do not automatically prove that finite samples actually cover |
| uncertainty propagation | Output distribution, standard uncertainty, coverage interval, and sensitivity | Results only cover modeled inputs and dependencies |
| Gauge R&R | Repeatability, reproducibility, part-to-part and total variation components | Dependence on experimental design, balancing, and handling of interaction terms |
| calibrated regression | Slope, intercept, residual, weight, or error-variance ratio | Regression residuals are not full equipment uncertainties |
| Two-dimensional straightness | Minimum parallel strip width and direction | Used according to two-dimensional sampling and agreed assessment methods |
The report should also describe the data range, missing values, outlier handling, random seed, software version, units, model assumptions, and uncovered error terms.
Methods, Routes and Key Selection Points
| method | Applicable input | Key limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Bootstrap percentile interval | Sample and computable statistical functions | Small samples, correlated data and distribution bias need to be evaluated |
| Monte Carlo spread | Measurement model, mean, covariance, and sampling settings | The covariance needs to be valid and the systematic error term needs to be clearly defined in the model |
| Cross ANOVA Gage R&R | Balanced parts, operators and duplicate data | Interaction terms, negative components and non-equilibrium designs need to be agreed upon |
| weighted linear scaling | Reference values, measured values and standard uncertainties | Weight source and range extrapolation need basis |
| Deming returns | Two-variable observations and error variance ratio | Variance ratio setting will affect regression results |
| Two-dimensional minimum area straightness | Limited two-dimensional sampling points | It needs to be used in conjunction with applicable standards, sampling methods and assessment conventions. |
| First order sensitivity propagation | Model, mean, covariance and difference step | Strong nonlinearity and step size sensitivity need to be verified separately. |
The choice of method depends on the data structure and reporting purposes. Just because a method is more complex does not mean that its results are more accurate or more consistent with quality system requirements.
Required data and preconditions
Submit the measurement object, measuring range, tolerance, measurement model, unit, reference instrument information, equipment version, collection environment and raw data. The measuring tool R&R needs to describe the part, operator, number of repetitions, measurement sequence and whether it is a balanced design.
The uncertainty assessment needs to list the input quantity, distribution, standard uncertainty, correlation and basis. Calibrated regression needs to account for the uncertainty of the reference value, the sources of measurement error, weights or variance ratios.
Invalid measurements, missing values, outliers, and duplicate records in the original data should be retained and not deleted directly without rules. If the data comes from different versions, equipment or operating conditions, it should be stratified first rather than merged into a single population.
Verification methods and applicable conditions
The project checks the correctness of calculations through analytical models, known data or independent software, and checks model stability and reporting consistency through sensitivity analysis, repeated runs and set-aside data.
R&R levels, uncertainties, process capabilities, and passing thresholds are determined based on actual experimental designs, reference quantities, customer quality systems, and reporting purposes. Third-party calibration, verification or accreditation documents are issued by institutions with corresponding qualifications.
Project implementation and delivery
- Purpose and model confirmation: Clarify the purpose of the report, what is measured, statistics, sources of error and passing rules.
- Data and trial review: Check sampling design, units, balance, correlation, missing and abnormal records.
- Calculation and sensitivity analysis: Fixed version, parameters and random seeds, output results, diagnosis and main impact items.
- Review and report delivery: Use reference calculations or set aside data for review, and record limitations, pending tests, and reproducible data.
Deliverables may include analysis procedures or calling modules, data dictionaries, calculation configurations, results tables, graphs, review records, and release notes. Raw data collection, calibration services, third-party audits and quality system signatures are confirmed separately.
Acceptance method
| Acceptance items | Check content | Delivery record |
|---|---|---|
| Input consistency | Sample number, unit, grouping, missing and abnormal status | Original data list and verification results |
| Computational correctness | Analytical models, known data or independent software comparisons | Reproducible differences in scripts, parameters and results |
| random method | Seeds, sample size, convergence, and replicate run differences | Running records and sensitivity analysis |
| Model suitability | Linearity, independence, distribution, correlation and interaction terms | Diagnostic plots, residuals, and unmet conditions |
| Report completeness | Indicator definitions, conditions, limits and uncovered error terms | Versioning reports and review records |
Pass thresholds are determined by quality goals and usage. Merely checking that there are no errors in the software cannot replace statistical model and experimental design acceptance.
Authorization, maintenance and changes
The statistics module can be licensed as equipment software or project analysis tool according to the agreed scope. When data structures, measurement models, reporting templates, and quality rules change, the need for program modification and revalidation should be evaluated.
Annual services can cover original model problem troubleshooting, version maintenance, data review and report template adjustment; new measurement projects, third-party system requirements, sampling tests and on-site measurements are newly added scope.
FAQ
Does good repeatability mean accurate measurements?
Not expressed. Repeatability describes the spread of results under the same conditions, and accuracy also depends on bias, calibration, reference values, and systematic errors.
Is the uncertainty assessment complete with the Monte Carlo results?
Reasonable measurement models, input distributions and correlations are also required. No amount of sampling can remedy model problems by omitting sources of error or using unwarranted distributions.
Can measuring tool R&R be directly set with a unified judgment line?
It should be determined in combination with the customer's quality system, process usage, product tolerances and test design, and the calculation caliber and passing threshold should be written in the project acceptance document.
Can a third-party calibration or accreditation report be issued?
This service provides statistical evaluation of algorithms and engineering. Third-party calibration, verification or laboratory accreditation documents are issued by institutions with corresponding qualifications.
