Procurement criteria for laser measurement should first define what is measured, the reference used for comparison and the comparison conditions. Width may mean overall cross-section width, width at a specified height or distance between fitted reference features. If the dimension and references differ, different readings alone do not establish that either device has failed acceptance.
Define the measured quantity and reference value
Specify the cross-section location, direction, reference features, units and tolerance on the drawing. Define how burrs, chamfers and rounded corners are handled. Record the reference instrument, procedure, calibration information and workpiece condition. A reference value has its own uncertainty; it is not an error-free true value.
Make acceptance conditions reviewable
| Agreed item | Required definition | Records to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Dimension | Geometry, section, reference features and units | Drawing revision and dimension identifier |
| Reference method | Instrument, procedure, calibration and uncertainty | Reference results linked to workpieces |
| Error evaluation | Signed differences, statistics and allowed range | Individual raw results and calculation method |
| Repeated measurements | Re-clamping, operators, time and environment | Every result and condition change |
| Operating coverage | Material, surface, position, temperature and motion | Grouped samples and invalid measurements |
| Decision rules | Boundary values, invalid values, retesting and disputes | Rule version and review outcome |
Separate error statistics from repeatability
An agreed dimension difference can be written as e = L_measured - L_reference. Mean difference helps examine offset; individual absolute differences and their distribution describe other aspects. Evaluate dispersion in repeated measurements separately. Define sample coverage, repetition counts and exclusion rules before testing rather than reporting only selected favorable results. See the NIST measurement-process characterization material for bias, repeatability and uncertainty.
Begin with representative workpieces
Use workpieces covering key geometry and surface conditions to check the measurement definition, then extend to the agreed working range and motion conditions. Assign version identifiers to changes in mounting, calibration, filtering or fitting parameters, and retest affected items. Resolution and repeatability values in a sensor's documentation do not prove that the complete machine meets its dimensional-error acceptance limit.
