An embedded camera acquisition design should begin with the data required by the application, then verify sensor, interface and system support. The following is a project design method for specified hardware conditions. It does not establish adaptation of arbitrary sensors and processors.
Signal and data chain
Imaging component → interface and transport components → host receiver and driver → frame buffers and timing information → acquisition API → processing, display or storage application. Parameters and status use the corresponding control channels. The customer or a specialist supplier provides illumination and specialized optics, with responsibilities agreed per project.
Define development by layer
| Layer | Inputs to confirm | Possible outputs |
|---|---|---|
| Imaging | Sensor or module, power, clocks, modes and formats | Device modes and register or SDK configuration records |
| Transport | Interface direction, cables, bridges or SerDes and control path | Interface definitions, connection information and link status |
| System | OS version, driver, receiver, formats and buffer support | Configuration, driver changes and acquisition debugging records |
| Data | Memory layout, timestamps, frame identifiers and ownership | Frame interface, lifecycle and error documentation |
| Application | Display, processing, recording, concurrency and shutdown | Examples, configuration and functional verification records |
When an existing SDK provides the required functions, define its integration and wrapper scope. List source code, design files, build conditions and testing separately when driver or hardware modifications are required. Application wrappers and board-level development are different tasks.
Minimum frame-interface information
Consider a frame identifier, capture time and clock source, dimensions, pixel format, row stride, valid data length, buffer ownership, quality status and error codes. Define each timestamp's origin and meaning. Host reception time is not automatically the sensor exposure time. Return explicit states for invalid frames, disconnection and timeouts so downstream software does not treat an old frame as a new result.
Staged acceptance
Check power, startup and enumeration first. Then verify raw frames and controls in the specified mode, frame completeness and timing under the target workload, and finally abnormal shutdown, reconnection and application integration. Preserve hardware, firmware, OS, driver and configuration versions. Record failures and reproduction conditions at each stage.
Handover and assessment inputs
Agreed deliverables may include interface definitions, specified source code, build instructions, configuration, examples, raw frames and test records. Vendor SDKs, firmware and third-party components are transferred under their respective licences. Provide camera and processor models, complete connections, target modes, SDK and system documentation, raw samples and acceptance requirements.
