A visible-light and thermal-infrared imaging project should first define what is imaged and how the outputs will be used. This article concerns visible-light cameras combined with thermal-infrared imaging devices. Near-infrared imaging requires a separate review of wavelength, illumination and data meaning. Side-by-side display, image overlay, spatial correspondence and temperature analysis are different tasks requiring separate acceptance checks.
Specify devices and data access
Record devices, lenses, firmware, interfaces and data formats. Establish whether original images, display images or measurement data are accessible. Assign responsibility for SDK use, distribution rights and documentation delivery. A function described for a device is not evidence that the current software has integrated or verified it.
| Responsibility | Inputs to establish | Reviewable deliverables |
|---|---|---|
| Components and interfaces | Models, lenses, data definitions and permissions | Device and interface inventory |
| Mounting and field of view | Mechanical mounting, overlap and working distances | Installation instructions and applicable scope |
| Temporal correspondence | Clocks, timestamp meaning, triggers and delays | Pairing rules and timing-verification records |
| Geometric calibration | Targets identifiable in both images and operating conditions | Calibration data, parameters and checking records |
| Business outputs | Display, correspondence between image regions or measurement tasks | Separate verification and unfinished items |
Verify timing separately from geometry
The manufacturer's trigger documentation describes trigger types and conditions for supported camera models. Check camera-image exposure start and end, trigger-event definitions and time sources on the actual devices. Equal frame rates or reception order alone do not establish synchronized capture. Check geometry separately with corresponding observations spanning working distances and the valid field of view.
Define scope through a pilot
Under representative stationary and moving conditions, retain both original files, configurations, pairing records and check results before expanding scope. List inaccessible data, targets that cannot be identified in both images and unverified parameters as unresolved. Specify delivery and acceptance responsibilities in the contract. This article promises no arbitrary-device compatibility, successful automatic image alignment or unverified temperature accuracy.
