With infrared JPEG images alone, first establish whether they are ordinary display images or still contain measurement data that the manufacturer's software can parse. The extension alone cannot answer this. Scope analysis from information actually present in the original file rather than treating screenshots or resaved images as temperature arrays.
What can be assessed from ordinary display images?
Assess region marking, visible changes, target-region extraction and readable text, with actual results depending on samples. Displayed temperature labels can be transcribed as visible text. Reading these labels does not recover a temperature value for every image pixel.
Which conclusions require more evidence?
With display colors alone and no documented measurement data or conversion basis, do not produce unverified pixel temperatures, temperature accuracy or threshold-acceptance conclusions. Different display ranges and color mappings also prevent direct comparison of actual temperature changes from colored areas alone.
Check the original file
Retain device-exported files and check the model, firmware, export method and whether manufacturer software reads measurement information. The manufacturer's file documentation gives an example of JPEG files retaining additional radiometric information; it is not a universal JPEG guarantee. Confirm separately whether screenshots, cropped files or resaved files retain such information.
Inputs for assessment
Provide original files, device and export documentation, corresponding interface screenshots, the intended task and known capture conditions. For temperature results, also provide formats, units, measurement parameters and reference-verification information. When inputs are incomplete, perform feasible image analysis and data checks while listing unresolved temperature-analysis inputs. Temperature conclusions remain pending until the required data and verification are available.
